Opening in 2011, the £72m Museum of Liverpool is:

  • The largest newly-built national museum in the UK for over a hundred years.
  • The world's first national museum devoted to the history of a regional city. It reflects Liverpool's global significance through its unique geography, history and culture.
  • A fantastic free family visitor attraction and an exceptional learning and community resource telling the story of Liverpool's development.
  • A major boost to the Liverpool economy. It will attract more than 750,000 visitors per year including 100,000 learning visits, provide at least 500 construction jobs and 73 direct permanent jobs.
  • The major physical and cultural legacy of 2008, Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture, it expresses the city's confidence as a great 21st century city.

We have consulted with more than 10,000 local people on the content of the museum, working to shape what will be on display and how the history of the city is communicated. The museum contains:

  • 8,000 square metres of public space across three floors.
  • More than 6,000 objects, many of which have never been on display before.
  • Four large gallery spaces that focus on Liverpool's rollercoaster development: Port City, Creative City, People's City and Global City. The museum also features a tailor-made gallery for children under six called Little Liverpool.
  • A History Detectives gallery which charts Liverpool's story from the last ice age to today.
  • A flexible exhibition infrastructure and changing displays to keep the museum's appeal fresh and exciting.
  • An 180 seat theatre for audio/visual and community theatre performance.
  • Facilities for after-hours events, meetings, after-school clubs and dining in the brasserie.
