Events taking place at National Museums Liverpool venues
International Women’s Day is marked annually across the world on 8 March, to inspire women and celebrate their achievements.
National Museums Liverpool’s venues have a series of free events taking place on 8 March and throughout the rest of the month in conjunction with International Women’s Day.
International Women’s Day – Thursday 8 March
WALKER ART GALLERY
Talk: Harriet Hosmer: Trailblazing Female Sculptor
8 March 1pm
American artist Harriet Hosmer broke through the gender barrier to become one of the leading neoclassical sculptors in 19th century Rome and set up a sisterhood of fellow female sculptors in Rome. (Suitable for adults)

INTERNATIONAL SLAVERY MUSEUM
Women and African textiles
8 March 12pm
Anthony Walker Education Centre
Learn about the history and meaning behind African textile design and how the meaning and use of these designs were central to the role of African women. (Suitable for all)

Talk: Women and Resistance
8 March 5:30pm
Anthony Walker Education Centre
Dr Alex Robinson talks about women’s experiences during Transatlantic slavery and their central role in resistance to enslavement. (Suitable for adults)

People’s Republic gallery
On 6 February 1918, the right to vote was finally granted to women in Britain. Hear the fascinating story of the suffragettes’ struggle and discover more about their activities in Liverpool.
Talk: Carrie Reichardt

Artist Carrie Reichardt talks about the fascinating discoveries she made in her research into Mary Bamber for the statue she created, which is now in The People’s Republic gallery.
Evening event: the radical history of Liverpool women workers in conjunction with Thompsons Solicitors
8 March Arrival from 5:30pm, starts 6pm – 8pm.
Including a showing of Radical Women, Radical City, a short film by Karen Ross and Hayley Trowbridge from the University of Liverpool, a talk by Mary Davis about Class and Gender in British Labour History and Museum of Liverpool staff will share ideas on building a collection celebrating women in the city and future events. (Suitable for adults)
