Freedom sculpture

stone sculpture with a face and chains

In February 2007 a group of young people from EMTAS (Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service) took part in an art project at World Museum Liverpool. Their aim was to create a piece of contemporary stone sculpture, representing the theme of ‘Freedom’.

The group worked with artist Hilary Manuhwa using the traditional Shona style of stone sculpture from Zimbabwe. Hilary delivered a series of workshops, where the group learned about Shona sculpture, while also gaining practical skills.

The group began by discussing the idea of freedom, what it meant to them and how it could be represented. With Hilary’s help, they worked together to create this sculpture, using opalstone from Zimbabwe.
