History Detectives will be a unique resource for Liverpool. Exploring the long history of Liverpool and the Merseyside region from the last ice age to the present day, it will pose the questions 'what was here?' and 'how do we know?'

A 38 metre timeline packed with objects will form the backbone of the gallery. Spreading far back before the granting of the city’s letters patent (charter) in 1207 and panning forward into the future, the timeline will offer an important context and overview to every visit to the Museum of Liverpool.

An interactive map of Merseyside will explore how places change, revealing the key events that shaped Liverpool's history. Visitors will be able to peel back layers of historic maps, discover archaeological finds or important buildings and even explore our natural history - searching by place, time or theme.

The timeline and map will be complemented by displays packed with objects, information and things to do will help visitors find out more about the history of specific areas in Merseyside in further detail. These temporary displays will change periodically to focus on new areas.

Accompanying this will be several hands-on stations which will help visitors to answer that key question ‘how do we know?’ These will include a rich bank of local archive photographs from National Museums Liverpool’s collections which will demonstrate to visitors how they can date their own family photographs.

The new City Soldiers gallery will utilise the King’s Regiment collection to tell the story of the regiment and inspire visitors to undertake their own family history research using the King’s collection and archive information.

The displays within History Detectives will include:

  • Timeline
  • What was here? - including an interactive map and spotlights on places in Merseyside
  • City Soldiers
  • Learning base
