Edward Burne-Jones (1833-98) was one of the great Victorian artist in a golden age of art. A decided romantic, he sought to portray the stuff of dreams and legends, investing his work with infinite care and thought. Early in his career he was greatly influenced by the Pre-Rhaphaelites, and particularly his friend Rossetti. Later, however, he developed his own style. The rich and harmonious colours of his paintings, added to their stillness and grace, inevitably caught the public's imagination and he became internationally famous.
