About the Walker Art Gallery

Walker Art Gallery is an excellent day out. As well as a stunning collection of paintings from the 13th century to the present, we also have a sculpture gallery, a craft and design gallery, and a space specially designed for children. And it is all FREE!

What to see in Walker Art Gallery

Ground floor

On your left as you enter is Big Art for Little Artists - a gallery specially designed for children up to 8 years of age.

On your right is the sculpture gallery.

Towards the back of the ground floor space is the entrance to the craft and design gallery.

The cafe, shop, cloakroom, lift and toilets are also on the ground floor.

First floor

There are several galleries on the first floor. They cover art from the 13th century to the present day, from Old Masters to Pre-Raphaelite artists. You can see work by Rembrandt, Hockney, Holbein, Waterhouse, Poussin, Turner, Lowry, Rossetti, Lord Leighton, Rubens, Sickert, Hogarth, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Stubbs, Millais, Nash and Freud to name but a few. The space around the stairs is also used for displays and children's activities.

What to do at Walker Art Gallery

As well as the artworks that are permanently on display throughout the gallery we also have special events and exhibitions. These are all FREE.

Exhibitions

These are temporary displays and can be seen in the temporary exhibition gallery on the first floor. You can find out about current exhibitions by following the 'Exhibitions' link in the main navigation panel beneath the Walker Art Gallery logo on this page.

Events

We have a regular programme of special events and activities. They include workshops, gallery talks, parent and baby mornings, and study days.

You can find out what is available on the day you visit by following the 'Events and activities' link in the main navigation panel beneath the Walker Art Gallery logo. The event description will tell you if you can just turn up, should collect a ticket from the information desk or need to book in advance. All events and activities are free.
