'The Lady with the Japanese Gown: Miss Enid Rutherford', James Hamilton Hay
Oil on canvas, painted in 1905
Acc. No. WAG 2511)
Hay was one of a group of Liverpool artists who attempted to modernise local art in the first years of the 20th century under the influence of advanced French painters and their English followers. Here, the Japanese gown, the tall narrow format and the delicate grey tonality particularly recall the work of James Abbot McNeill Whistler (1834-1903).
The woman in the painting, Miss Enid Rutherford, was an artist herself (as well as the daughter of a Lord Mayor of Liverpool). She married Hay in 1907, but died four years later.
