Intriguing, participatory and delightful – suitable for adults if accompanied by young people. Ken was for many years a violinist in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and in his spare time welded cow bells and developed a quirky repertoire of funny musical activities to involve audiences and introduce good but unfamiliar music. This session will include both virtuoso playing and lots for visitors to join in. Free event.

Julian is one of the foremost researchers and makers of the various types of traditional English bagpipes, including those from Leicestershire, Cornwall and the Scots borders. The fascinating performance shows off some of the range of European pipes, and tells of how the carvings, paintings and manuscript illustrations of medieval bagpipes, have helped Julian in the rediscovery and reconstruction of local English pipes. He'll also playing some of the tunes from his latest album, "SOME OF ME PIPES, SOME OF ME TUNES, SOME OF ME FRIENDS” which we are looking forward to launching at the Musicians’ Gallery session. “The Nativity – Sounds and Images from the Renaissance”
Renaissance Music Group has been a powerhouse of early music singing, both secular and sacred, for over 40 years. This performance brings some of the music for Christmas by Orlando Lassus, as impressive and fresh now as it must have been when written 500 years ago, and a magnificent way to start the Christmas season. Performance also includes a showing of some of the depictions of the story of Christmas in Renaissance art, including some in the gallery’s collection. Free event.
