The Annunciation

WAG 2819

Information

This painting depicts the moment the Angel Gabriel tells the Virgin Mary that she will conceive Jesus, the son of God. The annunciation is one of the most frequently depicted scenes in Christian art. The earliest examples date from the 4th century. Fowler was particularly noted for the 'luminous' quality he managed to achieve in his paintings. The twilight setting and glow of the sun in this painting make it a good example of his style.
