Umbakumba was set up by Fred Grey working with Groote Eylanders (Wanandilyakwa) and Yolngu from the mainland just after World War II. The paintings often carry themes that cut across from Groote to Blue Mud Bay. This painting is a wonderful example of the interrelationship between figuration and abstraction in the art of the region.
