Karl Franz Gruber was the brother and student of Professor Franz Xavier Gruver (1801-1862). Both were flower painters. This work illustrated four different plants from left to right: Pot-Marigold (Calendula officinalis), Thalia dealbata (A North American member of the banana family cultivated in European hot-houses), Commelina (rather than Comelina) coelstis (an ornamental species with no familiar English name) and Woody Nightshade (Solanum dulcamara).
