Box

A boat-shaped waka huia (treasure box) with humanoid heads at each end of the base forming handles. All carved decoration is on the outside of the box. The main design elements are a large central double spiral in the centre of the lid and one on the base, both with long pakati (dog's-tooth notches) between the ridges. The rest of the pattern is also based on rauponga (several parallel ridges and grooves with a notched ridge in between). Curved rauponga fill the four corners of the lid and base, and the midlines have lengthways whakarare (distorted pattern where the ridges of the rauponga regularly curve across the line of notches) . The lid and the base are joined by pegs and holes at each end. The lip of the box base is damaged.
