Lantern slide of an engraving depicting the British yacht Deerhound (Royal Yacht Squadron), 1864 The crew of the Deerhound was responsible for rescuing Raphael Semmes from the Atlantic after his ship, the Confederate commerce raider CSS Alabama, was sunk by USS Kearsage dueing the Battle of Cherbourg. Instead of delivering Semmes and other survivors to the Kearsage as prisoners of war, the yacht sailed for Southampton, allowing Semmes to escape justice.
