Information

Alessandro Casolani (1552/53 - 1607) was an Italian artist based largely in Siena. He was highly regarded as an artist during his lifetime. This drawing is possibly related to Casolani's 'St Catherine with the Crucifix' in the Upper Oratory of the Casa di Santa Catherina, Siena. This drawing was previously owned by William Roscoe (1753 - 1831) who thought it was by Raffaellino da Reggio (1550 - 1578). It was sold at his bankruptcy sale in 1816 as 'Christ with the Cross, appearing to the Virgin'.
