Coffin Box of Haty

Box of a coffin belonging to a man named Haty (HAty). The outer sides of the box are decorated with a continuous line of brightly coloured yet crudely painted hieroglyphs on a white ground. The floor is decorated with a giant djed-pillar with arms holding ankh symbols. The djed-pillar represents the backbone and ribs of the god Osiris. By being painted inside the coffin, it was believed to give stability to the mummy’s backbone so the dead person could stand upright and be reborn in the Afterlife. The lower half of the floor is damaged and partially missing. The lid was fixed in place by four tenons on each side that fitted into mortices cut into the thickness of the box sides.
