Feather boa

MOL.2015.61.5

Information

These boas were worn by entertainers at Liverpool’s Garlands nightclub. Garlands launched in 1993 as the only after-hours gay club in Liverpool. It was opened in reaction to the underground atmosphere that many thought surrounded Liverpool’s LGBT scene of the time. Since opening, Garlands has employed flamboyant costumed performers to greet and entertain people, both in the club, and outside. Many of these performers play with ideas of drag and gender, using costume elements such as these boas to produce fantastical characters and a carnival atmosphere. These boas were gifted by Garlands in 2015.
