Gerry and the Pacemakers challenged The Beatles for chart success. The Beatles turned down 'How Do You Do It?' before their rivals took it to number one. This was the first of three singles to reach the top spot, followed by 'I Like It' and 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. 'Ferry 'Cross the Mersey' was released in late 1964 and reached number eight in 1965.
