The Four Seasons - Autumn

Crane was well known for his illustrations. This particular work is one of four designs produced by Crane depicting the four seasons. It is thought that they are the original designs for a series of Christmas cards that were produced and sold by Marcus Ward & Co and appeared in one of their sales catalogues in the 19th century. This design represents autumn. Crane has used imagery associated with harvest time and has depicted the gathering of apples from the tree.
