George Melly (1830-1894) was a member of a well known Liverpool Merchant family; he was Liberal M.P for Stoke on Trent from 1868-1874 and was noted for his philanthropic work in Liverpool. Antoine de Salome came to England in about 1848, and became a very successful society portrait painter, exhibiting 14 times at The Royal Academy, and twice at The Society of British Artists.
