Isabella d'este

Isabella d’Este (1474-1539) was a major patron of the arts and a powerful political figure. She had enslaved African children as part of her household and was known to want a girl ‘as black as possible’.This shocking statement reflects the fascination some Europeans had with Africans, and the exploitation of enslaved children.
