Joséphine at Malmaison

WAG 87

Information

An imagined depiction of Joséphine Bonaparte (née de Beauharnais) (1763 - 1814) at her chateau de Malmaison in 1799, the year she purchased it from the French Banker Jacques-Jean Lecoulteux du Molay (1740 - 1823). Joséphine was a socialite who married General Napoléon Bonaparte in 1796 before he led the French army to Italy. Woodlock often painted scenes from history and literature in his hazy watercolour style.
