Information
Olpe, the name-piece of the Circle of the Grasmere Painter. The vessel of a somewhat attenuated shape with slim neck rim set off with small rotelle on either side of the band-handle. The neck is solid, with added white dot-rosettes on neck-ring and rotelle. On the body, four friezes of animals: bottom, antelopes (one a half-figure); three upper registers: antelopes and water-birds (Boardman: goats and swans), all fields filled with blob-rosettes. Incision for details of animals and on larger rosettes. Fabric dull, slightly yellowish, tan; paint dull, dark brown to dark red, slightly metallic sheen; added white and incision.
