King of Prussia Jug

Information

Not all the objects that disappeared after the May Blitz were destroyed by the fire. There are many stories about the museum’s objects and what happened to some of them during the chaos that followed the bombing of Liverpool. It is said that some objects were taken from rubbish bins outside the museum, some were given to air wardens in thanks for their brave work, and some objects were also looted. In the case of the King of Prussia jug it was thought that it had been destroyed in the Ceramics Gallery that was badly damaged by the fire. However, more than 50 years later it reappeared for sale in an auction catalogue. The museum’s staff had changed over the years, but they recognised the jug immediately and eventually it returned to the museum’s collection. If objects could talk it would surely have an interesting story to tell about what happened that night.
