Makhan Singh's Pedlar's Certificate No 1591

Makhan Singh arrived in the UK from India in 1948, aged 18. He married, moved to Liverpool and found work with his father. He met many young, recently arrived Punjabi men, and enjoyed visiting the Seamen's Club and local pubs. This certificate was issued by Liverpool City Police to Makhan in 1956 when he worked selling clothes to seamen in the city. (South Asian Heritage Month)
