This is a portrait of Mary Spencer Edwards, also a painter and a student at the Slade School with McEvoy. They met as students and were married in 1902, after a protracted courtship and engagement. Both exhibited at the New English Art Club. She regularly sat for his drawings and paintings. After their marriage, Mary largely gave up her own art, but returned to it following McEvoy's death in 1927. She exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1928 and 1937 and her painting 'Interior: Girl Reading' is in the Tate's collection (Tate N04362)
