Mersey Docks and Harbour Board (MDHB): Marine Surveyor and Water Baliff

MDHB/MS

Information

The depth of water in the Mersey and its approaches was of crucial importance. The Marine Surveyor's Department conducted regular surveys of docks, entrances, the upper estuary and Liverpool Bay and took responsibility for marking navigational hazards by buoys, three lightships, four lighthouses and a number of landmarks. It also took responsibility for removing hazards such as wrecks and published annually revised charts of the Mersey and Liverpool Bay.
