Mountainous Landscape
WAG 8141
Information
This watercolour gives some insight into Turner’s early technique. He would have begun by drawing the view in pencil. Thin washes of watercolour were then painted over the top.
The view in this watercolour is similar to Turner’s drawings of the Lake District from 1797 in the Tate's collection. The colouring and use of outline, however, are not in keeping with his work of that date. The watercolour may therefore instead be an earlier work copied from a piece in the collection of the physican Thomas Monro (1759 - 1833).
