Mummified Cat

M13639

Information

Mummified cat neatly wrapped in bandages of two colours with modelled eyes and ears. From the collection of Joseph Sams who purchased this and many other antiquities from the collection of Charles Bogaert (1791-1875) of Bruges, including “une superbe momie avec son chat” that appears on the final page of Bogaert’s six chapter inventory (Van De Walle 1976, 56). Sams sold a large collection of antiquities to Joseph Mayer of Liverpool in 1850. This would later be regarded as Mayer’s finest cat mummy, unfortunately destroyed in the Second World War but an image was preserved by Francis Llewelyn.
