Information
Mummified young crocodile originally wrapped in bandages. The crocodile was the sacred animal of the god Sobek. The cult temples reared large numbers of crocodiles for mummification. Date uncertain but probably Late Period through to the Roman Period. Unwrapped with trace of linen and resin stuck to the surface. Strips of reed stuck underneath the body to provide support.
Purchased at Steven's Auction Rooms Ltd., London, 15 October lot 575 (1 of 14 items).
