Nowhere Boy, 2009
Loosely based on the book by John Lennon’s half-sister Julia Baird, Nowhere Boy captures the turbulent adolescent years of Lennon in 1950s suburban Liverpool. On the cusp of adulthood and simmering with teenage rebellion, pain, and anger, the film explores John’s complex relationship with his Aunt Mimi and mother Julia.
Lennon’s ambition took him from Liverpool to Hamburg, London and New York – all port cities. The film sees the young rock and roller on the waterfront gazing wistfully across the river; a poignant symbol of the horizons he conquered with the Beatles, the city’s biggest cultural export.
