Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
WAG 1011
Information
Rembrandt painted many self-portraits throughout his life. He used them to experiment with different techniques, light effects, costumes and facial expressions. This work was painted when the artist was about 24.
This work is probably one of the very first by Rembrandt to enter England. It is most likely the painting that was acquired in 1633 by King Charles I, an avid art collector. It was later sold after his execution.
