Samson Fighting with a Lion

This print shows the Old Testament story of Samson, whoo was legendary for his strength, brawling with a lion. To create the print, Durer carefully cut away small amounts of wood from the block's surface and applied ink to the raised areas to trander the composition onto paper. By doinf this he created dramatic areas of shading to create flowing lines and intricate detail in the lion's mane. This is mirrored by Samson's wild expression and the agitation of his hair and clothing.
