The Shepherd on the Hill

WAG 154

Information

This masterpiece of Cotman's late style was painted in an experimental mix of watercolour and flour paste. This blend was intended to give the watercolour a density and depth of colour closer to the qualities of oil paint. As in his best work, the composition is simple and clearly organised. It is combined with a vigorous interpretation of light and shade, to express the stormy movement of the sky.
