Shield presented to Dixie Dean
MMM.1997.32
Information
Legendary footballer William Ralph 'Dixie' Dean (1907 - 1980) was presented with this shield by the Everton FC Supporters Federation Club to commemorate his English Football League goal scoring record of 60 league goals in the season 1927-1928. Dean's 60 goals were scored in 29 matches out of a total of 39 appearances for Everton FC that season. They included an incredible seven hat-tricks and all five goals in Everton's match against Manchester United.
The shield has 29 small medallions, each engraved with the name of Everton's opponent, the number of goals Dean scored in the match and whether the match was played home or away. Someone, maybe even Dixie himself, has cheekily scored an arrow into the surface of the shield pointing to the medallion relating to Everton's match against arch-rivals Liverpool FC (result 3-3).
Dixie Dean's league record has never been broken.
