A Song, 1934

In 1936 Collins’ work was shown at the International Surrealist Exhibition in London. Like other Surrealist artists he was interested in dreams and visions. This picture shows a fantasy island. An angel sits on the shore and celestial creatures float in the sky. Strange flowers send out rays of light. Collins includes shells in this painting. He remembered putting them to his ear as a child to hear the song of the sea.
