In December 1916, Canadian Pacific Line's cargo ship Mount Temple departed from Montreal for Liverpool. Her cargo included 710 horses and 6,250 tons of goods. Also on board were 22 wooden crates of dinosaur fossils, collected in the Badlands of Alberta by the Canadian palaeontologist Charles H. Sternberg, for the British Museum’s Natural History Department.
A few days later, German commerce raider SMS Möwe closed in and a gun battle killed four of Mount Temple’s crew. She was captured, and over a 100 crew and passengers were taken off before the ship was scuttled. The prisoners were taken to Germany. US citizens were released, but the others were interned as prisoners of war.
