St. Francis Holding a Skull
WAG 1995.80
Information
Jacopo Negretti was an Italian artist (1548-1628), known as Palma Giovane to distinguish him from his great uncle, also Jacopo Palma (il Vecchio, 1478/90 - 1528) and his father Antonio Palma, both painters. He became the leading and most prolific painter and draughtsman in Venice after the death of Jacopo Tintoretto (1518 - 1594), whose style greatly influenced Palma Giovane's own work. Palma Giovane's vast body of works represents the impact of central Italian Mannerism, principally of Tintoretto, on Venetian painting in the generation after Titian, Tintoretto and Paolo Veronese.
When acquired in 1995 this drawing of 'St Francis holding a skull' (WAG 1995.80) was on the same newly made mount as WAG 1995.79, 'A Man Praying', also attributed to Palma Giovane. Nothing further is known about the history or provenance of either drawing.
