Information

St Jerome was one of four Latin Doctors of the Church. The book and cross shown in the work represent his role as a commentator on the scriptures and author of the Vulgate (a 4th-century Latin translation of the Bible). He is depicted in cardinal's robes, as is customary in Renaissance pictures. Exhibited at Grafton Galleries in 1897, F.M.B.
