Information

Both sides of this page are covered with sketches by Holman Hunt. The back of the sheet includes several studies of a kneeling figure in slightly different positions. In the centre, one of these is outlined in an oval. This is the pose Hunt selected for the kneeling Virgin Mary in his painting 'Christ and the two Marys', which is now in the Art Gallery of South Australia, in Adelaide. At the top of the reverse side are several thumbnail sketches for 'The Eve of St Agnes' (Walker Art Gallery), including a drawing of the lovers Madeleine and Porphyro escaping from her father's house. The sketch shows Madeleine reaching for the door, but in the painting it is Porphyro who opens it. There is also a profile of Christ, sideways on. This relates to a discarded idea for the painting of 'Christ and the two Marys'.
