Information

While Sargent is primarily known for his large portraits of early 20th century American, British and French society figures. However he did work extensively in charcoal, especially in the later years of his career. He followed tradtional traditional academic drawing practices, drawing people, animals, landscapes and architecture in the world around him. Some his works, like this work, are incredibly quick, loose and casual wheras others are highly controlled and finished. Works such as this show how he planned out his works and reveal the different possibilities he considered.
