The Temptation of St. Anthony
WAG 1995.350
Information
A pen and ink study of figures set around the trunk of a large tree. The main bearded male figure, in the foreground, is assumed to be St Anthony who is in prayer in the midst of temptations from demons while he was travelling in the Egyptian desert. He is seated before a cross and a skull, with a contemplative expression. He is surrounded by about 5 more figures, all sketched in quick, dynamic pen strokes: a male seated figure, on the right behind St. Anthony, is holding his hands together in prayer, while a nude female figure appears on the left. There are a few more figures in the background.
