Trench art combination brass match-box holder and ashtray (about 1918) made by Private William Sproston, 10th Battalion (Liverpool Scottish) King’s Regiment, taken from a German cooker plate.
The inscription on the front reads: 'Souvenir La Gare [sic] Liverpool Scottish 1914 Kemmel, 1915 Ypres, 1916 Somme, 1917 Cambrai, 1918 Festubert', and a note attached to reverse says 'This ashtray was made by W. Sproston (Shoeing Smith) from the brass plate taken from a German cooker which was found abandoned by the Germans.'.
