Information
This seascape shows the River Mersey looking towards the city of Liverpool. The turbulence of the storm and the uneasy sea in the foreground contrast sharply with the stability of the city buildings on land in the distance.
Austin specialised in landscapes and coastal scenes. He was thought to be a pupil of Peter de Wint (1784 - 1849) and was greatly influenced by the work of JMW Turner (1775 - 1851). He exhibited at the Liverpool Academy (1822 - 1832) where he was elected Member and Secretary in 1824.
