White Star Line metal goblet from the Laurentic wreck

Metal goblet salvaged from the wreck of White Star Line’s Laurentic by Royal Navy diver Richard Stubbington. In January 1917, Laurentic was sailing from Liverpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a consignment of gold bullion, when she sank after hitting two mines off the Irish coast. 354 men lost their lives. The Royal Navy conducted a salvage operation between 1917 and 1924 to retrieve the gold, worth over £5 million. Richard Stubbington was awarded the British Empire Medal for his efforts. It was recovered in two parts and was later soldered together with a coin (1914 George V silver florin).
