Japanese woodblocks prints collection
Woodblock prints, also known as ukiyo-e, became popular in Japan during the Edo period (1603 – 1868) because they were cheap and could be mass produced quickly.
This is part of the Japan collection.
The ukiyo-e style can be identified by the use of vivid colours and bold lines with common imagery including landscapes, historical scenes, Kabuki actors and great beauties.
The World Museum collection of Japanese woodblock prints contains approximately 100 items. Here is a small selection of the highlights.
