Walker Art Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of 'Graham Crowley: I paint shadows' a captivating new exhibition by the 2023 John Moores Painting Prize winner. The exhibition, opening today, showcases Crowley's distinctive exploration of light and shadow through painting.
The exhibition marks a major return to Walker Art Gallery for Crowley, whose relationship with the gallery spans nearly five decades, having first entered the John Moores Painting Prize in 1976. His 2023 Prize-winning painting 'Light Industry'—now part of the gallery's permanent collection—is featured alongside a selection of Crowley's contemporary works.
Through his signature style, Crowley investigates what he terms 'sites of creativity', from gardens to workplaces, using varied brushwork to create images that appear simultaneously familiar yet disrupted. His masterful manipulation of light and shadow challenges viewers' perceptions of everyday scenes.
This solo exhibition coincides with the call for entries of the 2025 edition of the John Moores Painting Prize, with artists invited to submit work until 24 March. This year's Prize will feature an exceptional jury including Louise Giovanelli, Gemma Rolls-Bentley, Michael Simpson, Zoé Whitley, and Zhang Enli.
'Graham Crowley: I paint shadows' is now open and runs until 13 July 2025.
