Statement on Laurence Westgaph allegations

National Museums Liverpool are aware of the recent report in “The Post” which was published on 08 February 2025 about allegations concerning the conduct of Laurence Westgaph (“the Article”).
The Article makes many serious allegations, some of which relate to years prior to his freelance appointment with National Museums Liverpool.
We are very concerned about the allegations made in the article that refer to his alleged conduct while under freelance appointment with National Museums Liverpool. We have launched an internal investigation (which will be conducted by an independent external body) and we have urged colleagues with any information concerning the allegations in the Article to come forward.
We take the welfare of all our colleagues very seriously and have in place a ‘Speak Up’ process, whereby issues such as bullying, harassment and safeguarding concerns can be raised and investigated. In addition, National Museums Liverpool colleagues have access to an Employee Assistance Programme through which they can get professional advice and counselling.
We can confirm Mr Westgaph was appointed as a freelance Historian in Residence at National Museums Liverpool between August 2020 and June 2024 when the appointment ended. His appointment was approved by National Museums Liverpool’s Leadership Team and Board of Trustees.
As with any open and ongoing internal investigation, it would not be appropriate for National Museums Liverpool to comment any further on the allegations in the Article at this particular time.
