Upcoming essential maintenance at Walker Art Gallery
Some internal works between 3 March and 25 March may cause minor disruption.

Walker Art Gallery will be undertaking essential lighting upgrades to enhance the visitor experience and improve our sustainability. The works will affect the main staircases in the atrium on a rolling schedule between 3-24 March 2025.
What to expect during your visit:
3-16 March:
- The right-hand staircase (as viewed from the entrance) will be closed
- The Craft and Design gallery remains accessible via the main entrance until 9 March
- From 10-16 March, the Craft and Design gallery will only be accessible through the Sculpture gallery
17-24 March:
- The left-hand staircase will be closed (right-hand staircase reopens)
- Visitor lockers will be temporarily unavailable
- The cloakroom and school lunch area will remain accessible through Big Art
- The café will be closed 18-21 March, reopening 22-23 March with limited counter access
All areas fully reopen from 25 March.
Throughout these works, all galleries will remain open, though some routes through the building may change. Access to Big Art for Little Artists and the Sculpture Gallery will not be affected.
Why we're making these changes
This important upgrade will replace outdated lighting with modern, energy-efficient alternatives that will:
- Reduce our energy consumption and carbon footprint
- Enhance the display of artworks above the staircases
- Provide improved lighting for our events programme
We appreciate your patience while we complete these improvements to make your future visits even more enjoyable.
