Brilliant bugs

Come meet some of our brilliant bugs in this workshop in our aquarium gallery.

More than 80% of all living creatures on the planet are arthropods and their existence dates back before the dinosaurs! During this workshop our expert demonstrators will help your class or group find out more about these amazing animals. 

This workshop is available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Workshop details

Get up close to tarantulas, scorpions and cockroaches in this workshop, led by one of our knowledgeable animal care team who will help you discover fabulous facts about these little creatures.

The workshop will be geared to the needs of your group, setting the pace to suit younger visitors and adding more in-depth conversation and detail for older children and adult groups. Ensure you add details of your group's age and ability in your booking and we will ensure you get the most out of your animal encounter.

Practical information for your visit

To help your pupils gain the most from their session and ensure safe handling of the collections, it is essential that you have a ratio of at least 1 adult helper to 8 pupils. 

Please arrive on time for your workshop or we may not be able to run it for you. Please share these notes with your adult helpers before your visit. This will help them to support your pupils have a successful and enjoyable day.

Curriculum links 

English speaking and listening 

  • Students will be encouraged to participate in discussion, taking turns, and listening to what others say. 

  • There will be an opportunity to discuss and clarify the meanings of words, linking new meanings to known vocabulary. 

  • Students will have an opportunity to ask and answer questions.

  • Develop an understanding of methods of scientific enquiry so that pupils learn to use a variety of approaches to answer relevant scientific questions. 

Learning outcomes 

Knowledge and understanding 

Pupils will: 

  • Develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of the natural world. 

  • Delve into different types of animals and look at how the animal kingdom can be divided into two groups, invertebrates and vertebrates. 

  • Understand the importance of looking after animals and protecting the natural world for future generations. 

  • Look at different characteristics and adaptations of animals, discussing how they help them survive and live in the wild. 

  • Explore the difference between herbivore, omnivore, carnivore and discuss food chains within the session. 

Skills 

Pupils will: 

  • Have the opportunity to draw on and share their existing knowledge whilst also being encouraged to absorb and recall new information assimilated throughout the session. 

  • Gain practice in working through an activity collaboratively and with consideration for their peers. 

  • Improve their speaking and listening skills. 

  • Improve their confidence by individual participation in dramatic sections of the presentation. 

Concepts 

Pupils will: 

  • Appreciate that objects and animals displayed and worked with in the museum are to be treated with respect. 

  • Understand how our knowledge of the past and present is constructed from a range of sources. 

Attitudes 

Pupils will: 

  • Be confident in interpreting information on different types of animals. 

  • Have had opportunity to work collaboratively with peers. 

  • See the World Museum as an enjoyable and stimulating place to visit.
